Suggestions for Bed Along Fence

This part of my yard (adjacent to the fence) has been driving me crazy for 3 years. After repeated attempts, I have accepted that grass will not grow here, so I am giving up on it. The spot gets some dappled light, and is wet well after it rains because the ground dips here. I'm thinking of putting a small raised bed connecting the flower bed you can barely see in the back far right up to the edge of the mondo on the side of the walkway about 3 feet to the right of the front swing leg. (It would cover where the dirt is alongside the fence.) I love irises and other tropical plants. Any suggestions for other plants or any other ideas of what to plant here? I really like perennials and greenery. No bushes though.
Thanks in advance!

| hmm- since the fence is right there, I would start a kiwi vine or three (two girls and a boy), which likes the shade. then I would plant a row of taro bulbs (if there's a mexican grocery near you, they're about a buck a pound, instead of $5 a piece for the 'garden' kind) which will appreciate the wet feet, and tolerate the shade. impatiens might well be perennials in your neck of the woods- coleuses as well. when I was living on SF Bay in california, there were HEDGES of both growing in places (they get woody stems after a few years) and all you really need to do to them is keep them pinched (which means an unending supply of new plants) |
