plants for dirt heap

I am a first-time gardener. In the neglected back part of our garden I shoveled up a heap for my kids to play with. It is 1.5 m high, maybe 8 m long, curved and facing south. I thought I would just leave it like it is and let the weeds take over, so it would become green with time. Now I am getting more ambitious, the weeds don't look as nice as I hoped and the grass seeds I threw on didn't sprout - probably because it was to dry at the time, and the water hose is far away from this place. Now I am looking for inspiration what to do with this - It is clay soil, and heaped up quite carelessly, so there is no top soil on top. I was thinking about a thyme hill - or something like that, it is facing south after all and the microclimate should be pretty warm. But it shouldn't involve much work or be difficult to maintain - my kids should still be allowed to play there.

Any ideas? Thank you!
