Hard to plant spot

lovelycherry

I have a slope that slants towards the front of the house this creates a gully and erosion from the top of the slope.

In the gully rain water pools.

If we have no rain the site is hot and dry, site faces west.

The soil drains poorly and I get a puddle of mud when it rains.

I have not been able to grow grass on the site. Any plant needs to be able to survive hot, dry, really wet when it rains and poor soil.

I am thinking that maybe iris or joe pye weed might grow in this area. Any suggestions would be great.
