Plants for Difficult Places

Evergreen privacy in shade?

The back of our property has a retaining wall about 3 feet high. There are mature maples and tons of shade there. Our house really needs to have some privacy from the house to the left. Behind us is a driveway to another home, and at night the headlights on cars come right in the rear of the house.

I am thinking of putting in some kind of evergreen for a privacy barrier. Any suggestions? I'm not a big fan of arborvitae. Would holly work here, or any other thoughts?

How about yews? They're not the fastest growing evergreens but they do fine in shade and take well to pruning...

I'd suggest Japanese Holly (Ilex) - they aren't sharp like regular holly. There are many varieties available.
