I love my black chokeberries. They were planted in much the same way- wet, yet dry mid-summer. They love it. Books may say that they only groe 3-5 ft. However, after the 3rd year, I need to trim at least 11/2 ft. You could easily hedge them or be more informal. They get white flowers in spring and sugar maple color in the fall with big black berries that stay put. I don't know about the deer, though. I also have a traditional large cotoneaster that likes that soil. I have seen those in many a farm area while traveling. So deer must not care much for those.

An evergreen, Emerald Green Cedar might do the work. But if the area is very boggy, this may not work out. I suggest you try to see why the area is boggy and perhaps amend the ground to correct this problem.

I've dealt with this for thirty years. The recommendation of Emerald Green cedar(aka arborvita) is a good choice I have seven and they are doing fine, as are a few other cedars. Redtwig Dogwood does well and grows fast to give you a quick screen, you have to prune it often to keep it neat looking. I planted the arborvita and dogwood together and took the dogwood out when the arborvita was large enough for the job.
