Underplanting a willow tree--what can compete?

We just love our 5-year-old willow; it's the focal point of our garden and we would love to be able to underplant it with some groundcovers and small bushes (preferably evergreen). We've heard that it's very difficult to successfully underplant willows because they compete for water and nutrients--and usually win! I'd appreciate any suggestions that you might be able to give me. The tree is currently acting as a shade for all my plants in pots that are waiting to go into the ground, but once they're gone (if ever), we'd like to use this area as a cozy sitting area. Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions.

Mary
