Grass alternative drought resistant

Due to drought and watering restrictions in SoCal, most of the grass (Marathon) on the sidewalk is dying. I want to replace it with something that can withstand the valley heat (daytime can go to 90-100 F), full sun and less water (2 days a week in hot summer). Since it is sidewalk in front of the house, people do walk over it but not too much. Sidewalk is isolated from other area so invasive plant is fine but the height should not be more than few inches. The area is about 3-4 feet wide and some 30 feet long. I have two such sidewalks. I won't want to spend too much money so I can wait several months of growth to cover the whole area. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thymus, catmint and native grasses/ground covers are choices. Contact your local Cooperative Extension Service for suggestions about natives.

Blue grama grass might work and it is native to your area. Also Ruby Grass and Mexican feather grass are beautiful drought and heat tolerant options.
