Stinky, sweaty, smelly old clothes as deer repellent?

Once visiting a guy's garden, I noticed a shirt or two hung on poles. Sometimes I'll go out wearing a shirt, start working but then as it gets hotter. and I get sweatier, I'll take it off and hang it wherever's convenient. I assumed he did the same. Then I noticed a few more hanging here and there. Did he forget to bring them back in with him everyday? I don't recall if I asked about them, he saw me wondering or what but eventually he informed me that, yes, they were his sweaty, smelly old work shirts but they were hung there intentionally to deter the deer!

This does make some sense to me and sounds like it could work. Especially this time of year, I have no problem producing an abundance of smelly clothes so I'm thinking about trying it. Has anyone here tried this or some thing similar and does it actually work? (Other than a 9' tall electrified fence, Nothing else seems to!)
