Black Walnut vs. Nannyberry

| I had posted this question in a different area, but thought I might have more of a response here...
Has anyone had problems growing Viburnum lentago / Nannyberry near BW Trees?
I planted 2 at drip-line of big old trees. They've looked sickly since transplanted - other Vib types put in at the same time look great. Lists of juglone tolerant plants say most Viburnum types are tolerant, yet "some are sensitive", but they aren't specific on which varieties.
The soil is beautiful w/ great moisture & drainage, & no powdery mildew, (except no earthworms in sight). Are Vib. lentagos slow to rebound from transplant or has anyone else killed them with juglone?
BTW - Trilobums, dentatums, opulus & bodenance (sp?) show no signs of sensitivity.
A side thought - I also have noticed a conspicuous lack of grubs near walnut trees. Since juglone eliminates earthworms, it is possible it's toxic to grubs also? Or is this just wishful thinking? |

| Hi, I have a garden surrounded by BW trees. Generally the lists (and there are many) are only a guideline for planting. I have found that gardening under these trees is a real crap shoot. I don't hive this Viburnum but if it is failing in spite of good soil, I would transplant it to a safer location As to grubs and other insects, generally, they seem to prefer to keep their distance. I rarely see black flies or mesquitos near the bws. Earthworms are fewer, but if you add organic matter, they will come. Good luck Barbara aka Hawkeye Belle |
