Since basketballs and feet are likely to be stepping on anything around the edge, I would suggest a mixture of the low growing "steppables" type ground cover. They are available at nurseries and you can ask the staff there to recommend ones that can really withstand traffic.

Hosta do best in partial shade,is the court is in full sun? If so, between the sun, the heat and and the feet, I think hostas will look ragged.
