planting under beech trees

Our yard has 3 beech trees planted as some sort of focal point by the previous owner. The trees are 15 to 25 ft tall, but they are by no means young trees. I read that beech are extremely slow growing. Anyhow... I would like to put a bench under the trees because the view from there back toward the rest of the garden and the house is actually quite nice. I wonder if anything will grow successfully under there. It gets some morning sun and isn't what I would call deep shade. Would hosta, heuchera, bergenia, pulmonaria or ferns work? I don't mind watering them at the beginning but I would like the watering duty to cease after the plants have established themselves. Oh and I have dug round the base of the trees... planted daffodil bulbs last year. Doesn't seem like there is a huge amount of roots yet.
