Can river birch be planted in standing water?

Hi all,

I am having a three stem 5 foot river birch delivered tomorrow. Was going to plant it on the side of my babbling brook -- which often overflows into the surrounding low area. (i guess you could call it a psuedo-wet land). Right now the area is very muddy and will be so also in the spring.

Is this an approriate place or should i try to find a higher and drier place near my brook?

Many thanks,
Suzanne
