ground cover over septic field?

I'm moving into my new house & I have never had a septic system before. I'm looking for a ground cover besides a lawn (I hate to mow)that I can plant over, & will not get into or harm the septic field. The area is mostly shady (under deciduous trees), Probably only gets 3-4 hrs of sun. I am considering Ajuga & Lily turf. Does anyone know if these plants would be ok over the septic field? Anyone with experience with this have any other ideas as to what kind of ground cover will be ok in this situation?

generally deep fibrous rooted native meadow plants are recommended over septic fields because they can improve the seepage capacity of the soil. i just posted this same statement on another thread - was that yours?... in the past it was a concern to stay clear of deep "tap" rooted plants but its been found thats as much of a problem as they thought it would be... www.prairienursery.com has a seed mix specifically designed for septic fields.

Shady One: here is a web link from the University of Minnesota Extension Service - very helpful information on landscaping septic fields, also has a list of suggested plants towards the end of the document. Pennsylvania is a little different as far as which plants will thrive, but it will give you someplace to start. Good luck.

Here is a link that might be useful: Landscaping Septic Fields
