suggestions for planting along a long wall

My backyard is long and narrow, with a long wall running about 500 feet parallel with the back of the house, which faces exactly west. I still have not figured out what to plant along the wall that would'decorate' it and not grow too tall to cover the wonderfull view of palms against the sunset. I currently have some sort of hedgeing plants that ive trimmed into conical forms (you could see three of them if you look closely along the wall), but i would like something that blooms. any suggestion? by the way, our climate is mediteranean (long dry summers, and mild &wet winters)
