How do I press orchids?

Posted by Daisy_1 z5 (My Page) on

I am a beginner and would like to press white and pink orchids from my sisters wedding, and then frame them. Does anyone have a good method? I would like to take them apart so that they lay flat. Do I press them in a standard flower press, or do I need to microwave them first ( and how do I do that)? Then after they're dried and I've glued them onto the picture mat board (is white glue ok, or what is better?), do I need to use some sort of preservative on them to "keep" them? Thank you for your help!

Well, most people use some sort of string, and hang them somewhere for a few days until dry, but I suggest getting them laminated.

I have pressed dendrobiums (white and burgundy) successfully in the Microfleur, microwave press and also in the Sunwave press.http://www.nantic.com
I hope the wedding was not already, as time is of the essence. It's probably too late if the wedding is past. But in the future, if you do not have either of these products, you can make a microwave press by creating stacks of cardboard (5-6" square) and felt and layering flowers between them, and then banding the pieces together with wide elastic bands, etc. Depending on the power of your oven, "cook" them on high for 30-60 seconds. Email me for further details.

Here is a link that might be useful: Microfleur
