Salt as a dessicant?

Hi Driers & Pressers,
I've been using silica gel as a dessicant, but it is fairly expensive. Has anyone tried using table salt in place of silica gel? If so, how did it work? Tx.

For anyone interested, I just did a little research. It turns out that you can use salt, so long as it is uniodized salt.

Thank you so much for sharing this with us! I am going to check out the site now. Curious if Kosher salt would work, since that's what we use in our house...

Would you use the salt just like you would the borax? I didn't really much info about using just salt to preserve.

The statement was to add the cornmeal to the borax to reduce weight on the flowers and that adding plain salt 1 to 2 tablespoons might speed up the drying time. No specific ratios for cornmeal - borax. Salt that is used for canning would probably be the kind to use.

I guess I misunderstood. I was thinking they were referring to using salt alone. Sorry.

Good luck, Chey.. working with dried flowers is very enjoyable. Nice to share with you. Don't forget to give follow up on the calla lily. EP
