Dried horse apples a.k.a. Bois d'arc fruits

I hope I am in the right place. I posted several months ago that I would try to dry these, and I have a report to make. I used my most excellent Excalibur food dehydrator and 5 whole horse/hedge apples. It took 3 days on low heat and smelled awful. It produced very dried hedge apples that now resemble large, slightly green meatballs. I cannot think of how to use these ugly things in anything, so I would deem it a failure.

There was a previous thread on this, but it doesn't seem very conclusive.

Here is a link that might be useful: Dried hedge apples
