My husband and I are starting market gardening together - he FINALLY has the gardening bug. Our land is without shade and summers in central kansas are hot and extremely windy; just because you have an irrigation system going of sorts doesn't mean veggies can stand those combined conditions. My secret over the years in my personal garden has been mammoth sunflowers. I start them in April and every 3 - 4 rows I plant them. I multi-crop with cukes, pole beans or radishes, sugar peas, etc. They provide shade and I sell the heads when dried for $l.50. Planty of buyers, I just cut the stalk 3 ft. below the head. Great for instant bird feeders...
