how do drought tolerant plants do it?

I'm doing research for a project. Can anyone tell me exactly how drought-tolerant plants work? How do they live and grow using so little water? When, for example, you split open a leaf from a jade plant or ice plant it's filled with mositure. What's the bio-mechanical mechanism that makes this possible? Are their leaves less porous and therefore able to withstand withering heat better than their less drought tolerant cousins? Any ideas or reference sources would be appreciated.

Thanks.
