Household & Office Plants for better Air Quality 101

I work out of my home and want to add some plants mainly for better air quality. I know very little about household plants. Can you recommend one or two plants that can add to the air quality and make it easy to maintain. My office has a large window (5’x6’) with plenty of light.

Any help like how often to water, plant location to window, fertilizer, and maintenance will be appreciated!

Thanks!
Eric

Hey Eric,
I would recommend a fig tree or 2. Edible fig or ficus carica has nice big leaves that would probably filter a bunch of air. Also, the leaves make a great tea and the fresh fruit is awesome! Only one drawback would be that in the winter the trees go dormant and need to be in a cooler place to rest, like a basement. Good luck and I hope you get bitten by the fig bug.

I have a small pepper plant called a chili pequin that seems to be a great indoor plant. I put it outside in the spring so it will produce fruit. I dont know how much air it will cycle but at least its an interesting plant. The tiny little peppers are really hot.

Eric, you ended up in the edible landscape forum, so we may not be the best resource for you. Try the House Plant forum. They may have better suggestions and more info on easy care plant choices for your home work space.

Kamal Meattle has a TED talk for: "how to grow fresh air"

He recommends 3 common house plants:

Areca Palm (Chrysolidocarpu lutescens)
Mother in Law’s Tongue (Sanscevieria trifasciata)
Money Plant (Epipremnum aureum)

There is a short video clip on the TED website about it with pictures, reasons, and long term research to back it up.

Also check out the fragrant plants forum; why not have better air quality AND pleasant fragrance too? =)
