edible shrubs for hedge Z5

Hello, I have been overwelmed by the amount of information on this forum. It's great.

I want to plant a mixed hedge 6-8 foot from the street to block the view and give the yard an enclosed feeling. This area may get some road salts and has heavy soil. It gets full southern sun. Mid to late summer here is often very dry.

I would like to use edible shrubs or short trees. Native (midwest or at least US)species are perfered. I had in mind saskatoon blueberry, elderberry, rosa rugosa, current (not sure what kind) and wild plum. Highbush cranberry and a bush type cherry are also thoughts. Please let me know if you think some/all would be suitable for this application. Also, if you know the tastiest species/varieties of each.

Thank you for your expereince and expertise!

I suspect that road salt could be a problem with the saskatoons, but the other items on your list will probably handle the conditions well. If you're interested in native edible species then go to Oikos Treecrops. They are out of Paw Paw Michigan and have a great selection. Ken Asmus (the owner)has really created something unique in this company. I've purchased a number of items from them and have been exceedingly pleased with the service and quality. You might want to include beach plums in your planting as well. These form an dense weeping hedge that kick out plenty of fruit.
