Asian Pear Trees???

| ok, so I found some asian pears that I would like to plant, but before I buy them I have some questions:
Do you need to plant 2 of the SAME tree?
OR is it ok to plant 2 different kinds of asian pear trees to cross pollenate?
OR can you plant 1 asian pear & 1 other kind?
How far apart do they need to be planted?
Any help would be greatly appreciated... we moved into a new home in December 2005 and we have 3 acres that had absolutely no landscaping whatsoever. SO, I have been slowly adding things as we go, when I find things that I like. |

| I live in the nova suburbs and have grown the asian pears shenseiki and hosui for about 18 years. I was told that you needed 2 different kinds to cross pollinate and that they would have to be both asian varieties. The barlett that I already had would not work. Of the two my favorite is the hosui. It is a russet pear and just delicious. Funny thing, every now and then we have a season when the shenseikis taste flat out wonderful. Must be dependent on weather conditions? We don't spray at all, but the trees are side by side and produce so much fruit that it has to be thinned or the branches will break from the weight as they develop. If I had it to do over again I might plant them farther apart! |

| Thanks Rian...I appreciate the advice. Asian pears are by far one of my favorite fruits & since our yard is so large, we are trying to plant as much edible landscaping as we can. |

Please explain if this is true? will barlett cross pollinate with on shenseiki? thank you. I have the same situation. |
