snails in lettuce in the house!!

I have some wonderful lettuce growing in the garden. I let it sit in a bucket of water for a short while hoping to dislodge any bugs, brought it inside and let it soak a bit and up climbed a small snail. I hate snails and the thought of one in my kitchen is too much!!

Any ideas how to be sure this doesn't happen again short of washing each leaf separately outside? It was a cold day and the water is cold out there. I do wash leaves separately inside however.

How about a salt solution? Might the snail drop to the bottom of the bucket?

I really do want to enjoy home grown lettuce but this is a problem for me.

Thanks
Ginny

Are you talking real 'snails', with shells? Or 'slugs', with no shells?

Used coffee grounds should help. Something about the caffeine really affects snails/slugs and the coffee grounds are great for the plant.
