Are flax seed pods edible?

I have trouble eating flax seed unless I add them to cranberry juice, then they taste like apple pie filling to me. But I planted some flax seed and found that the green seed pods were quite tasty and would make a great salad addition. Have they ever been eaten as a food? They have only been around a few thousand years! I'd hate to poison myself on a bowl full. I eat daylily flowers before they open and they are good stir fried.

RE: Are flax seed pods edible?

I found this through a quick Googling:

However, unripe flaxseed pods are believed to be poisonous and should not be eaten. Raw flaxseed or flaxseed plant may increase blood levels of cyanide, a toxic chemical (this effect has not been reported when flaxseed supplements are taken at recommended doses).
