When to pollinate paw paw

My two paw paws are now in their 9th year. Last year was the first year they produced blossoms; I pollinated by hand when the blossoms were first opening, but they all shriveled up and dropped off. Any tips on exactly when I should pollinate?

Hi Bradybb,
This is a GREAT video...lots of very helpful information. Thanks so much. Just knowing the maroon color indicates maturity will save a lot of wasted effort. and identifying male vs female is essential too.
