Best bets for central Oklahoma?

Shelley Smith

I am looking to add some smaller trees/shrubs to my small suburban lot, and I would like to get some opinions on which edibles (fruits & nuts) grow best in my area. I live in the OKC metro area in central Oklahoma, where the soil is clay and tends toward alkaline, summers are hot and dry, and winters are variable but can get down to 0 or below. We are in zone 7a.

What are the 'best bets' for this area? I'm looking for trees/shrubs that will grow here without a lot of babying, and produce a decent amount of fruits or nuts that are tasty and useful. My front yard is in full sun, and I have space in the back yard that gets some shade. Since my lot is small, I really want to focus on what will give me the most bang for my buck so to speak.

I do have about 100 square feet in raised beds for vegetables, and am planning to grow several southern highbush blueberry varieties (I know, I said minimal babying, but I make an exception for blueberries :)

Thanks - I'm looking forward to reading everyone's suggestions!
