Will Nankin Cherry and Dwarf Bing Cherry cross-polinate?

| Hi,
Will Nankin Cherry (Prunus tomentosa) and Dwarf Bing Cherry cross-polinate eachother mutually?
Will flowering cherry trees a block away polinate my Dwarf Bing Cherry?
Thanks,
Steve |

| They will not cross pollinate to the best of my knowledge. The chromosomes are not compatible. Nanking cherries will cross pollinate with Sand Cherries and possibly Japanese and Wild Plums but that is it. |

| A Montmorency cherry tree is a cross between a sweet cherry and a Nanking cherry (look it up the Nanking will be called Prunus Tomentosa in the reference). If this cross between sweet and Nanking were impossible the most popular variety of tart cherry would not exist. Having said that the problem of overlapping bllom time is what makes this more the poor choice for pollinator. Sorry rqhansen common myth that the lakc of cross pollination is due to DNA and not bloom time. |
