Found this 2' wide "shroom" growing on the side of one of my trees today.
Anyone know what it is?

Well, it definitely looks to be one of the "Shelf" fungae, although which specific one I couldn't tell you.

Yes... some sort of shelf fungus. This is a very bad sign for the health of the tree. Like a mushroom popping out of your lawn, this fungus is but a tiny manifestation of relatively huge fibrous organism running through your tree. However, unlike a mushroom in your lawn which is harmless, this shelf fungus is slowly but surely decaying the wood inside your tree. What it leaves behind is a putrid, rotten, dripping mass of spongy wood fibers. These fungi are an important part of forest ecology in breaking down dead trees and returning them to the soil, but they can also attack live trees and do the same thing. Supposedly this would only happen to trees that were not so healthy to begin with.

A shelf fungus, huh?
Interesting.

Fortunately, it's growing on one of our 'junk trees'...'junk' meaning, we don't know what it is, but it's a dirty, ugly tree. LOL
We plan on removing about 6 of them...and yes, you're correct...none of them are healthy.
Plus...they've been here forever.

If it's at all possible & not too damaging to the landscape or adjacent buildings, do think about leaving one or two of these trees up for wildlife. I know that I wouldn't have the vast numbers of woodpeckers, chickadees, titmice, etc., I have now if it weren't for the number of dead trees I've allowed to stand.

I miss-typed...I meant we planned on removing them...now that we're moving, only one is coming down...the one with the fungus...half of it came down all by itself in no wind last year...LOL

Don't eat that by the way.
