Pinxter Apple

My Cooperative Extension magazine recently referenced pinxter galls--aka, pinxter apples--as edible, but provided no further info, such as when to eat them, what they taste like, whether they should be eaten raw, or what. A google search yielded an old Nat'l Geo. article where the author mentions quenching his thirst during a hike with pinxster apples. Anyone ever eaten one? I am curious but a little daunted by the lack of clear info/guidance out there.

RE: Pinxter Apple

Bloomville;

Pinxter apples are a kind of gall that occurs on Evergreen and deciduous Azaleas, usually lemony in color, or whitish.

Yes they can be eaten-- I personally have taken a bite and there is no harm in eating them, but they don't have a taste that you can acquire , so it's a waste of time in picking them. Altough they disfigure the branches/leaves of those Azaleas, usually, you can just pick them off, and discard them.
