What's the best way to prepare a strawberry bed?

Posted by Alison 5/OH (My Page) on

I am digging up a lot of June-bearing strawberries and giving them to a friend. I inherited them and don't know much about strawberries, and she doesn't know much about gardening -- any suggestions on how she could prepare a bed for them to help them grow best?

Plant as regular perennials if you want just "landscape" your yard or as vegetables if you want good harvest.

Well for eating purposes:
Idealy a raised bed with well draining soil in at least 5-6 hr. sun. Away from moist areas of grasses and such to reduce slug infestation. Amended with compost or manure, or some other fertalizing admendment. If you cannot make a raised bed then it is best to make a seperate area from the rest of a vegtable garden that is a permament area.

Water regularly. Prune blooms til at least 5 leaves have developed, then you can allow for fruit to set. June bearing have laready bloomed for the season. They are known to set big crops in May -June time. They will send out runners in which you can obtain more plants for next year - Still keep the ones you have!. Cut runners off until at least 5 healthy leaves have developed. Life span for most strawberry plants is apporx. 3 years then fruit will deplete. when season is complete before frost mulch well to protect them for next year.

gurney's catalog offers a pyramidal starwberry bed,it has 3 layers with a sprinkler system on the highest level of the pyramid,as well as netting to keep critters out of your crop and plastic covering if necessary.i hope this helps you.
