Best groundcover?

I've finally got DH to agree to rip out the weedy high maintenance mulch in front of the house and let a groundcover grow. The requirements are that it be edible (my requirement), shade out all weeds (his requirement), perennial, low maintenance, low growing, not attract pests, and be attractive enough to get by with the neighbors. There's room for a substantial sized plot in full sun - approximately 8' by 6' or so, I'd guess. We're in SW Michigan. So far I'm considering campanula, thyme, parsley, and ajuga, but nothing really has stood out. I'd love to hear the experienced opinions of all of you!
