when is my 'anna' kiwi ripe?

My arguta "anna" kiwi set fruit for the first year and I am curious about when you can tell the fruit is ready to eat. I checked one yesterday and it was still not very--bitter and a bit crunchy. Some are starting to turn a bit red on the shoulders.
I'm not opposed to letting them dangle from the vines past first picking opportunities, but the heat here is sapping the vines as they send all their "oomph" to the fruit, and I'd like to let them recover a bit. (They've not created enough shade for themselves to keep from suffering when it gets into the 90s.)

| Maybe you already got an answer. I found one fruit that had been knocked off quite green on the ground some time ago, and it was soft, so I ate it. It tasted sweet. I think like most fruit it is better to pick it ripe so the sugars have developed but that if picked hard for storage purposes it will eventually soften so you can eat it. Perhaps that would be good if you had a lot of fruit to store, like pears. |

| I try to pick mine slightly "green" and ripen them in a basket in the kitchen for a few days. I found that if I wait for them to fully soften on the vine they have a tougher skin. |
