Avocado

Tried researching this but didn't realize there are more than 2 kinds of avocados, and got confused. At the grocery, there are always the "regular" avocados, slightly smaller than a tennis ball, and very dark, almost black. Sometimes there's also what they call "Florida avocado" which is about twice as big, bright green, and almost tasteless, IMO.

I would like to know the latin names of these 2. And when do avocados naturally come ripe - when are they "in season?" Is it possible to grow the good kind in 8b? Is there another avocado besides these 2 that would grow here and taste like the "regular" kind?

Many people on the tropical fruits forum have avocado trees and have made reference to this website.

There is a lot info on this on the UF extension website for hoticulture. But I would like to add a comment.... the smaller type are the Mexican variety, where as the larger green are usually of the West Indian Variety. The Large Green (Florida Type) are lower in calorie and fat and take well to added herbs and spices. These make the best gauc in my opinion and varieties like the Lula and Russell could take on the Hass any day.
