Tried researching this but didn't realize there are more than 2 kinds of avocados, and got confused. At the grocery, there are always the "regular" avocados, slightly smaller than a tennis ball, and very dark, almost black. Sometimes there's also what they call "Florida avocado" which is about twice as big, bright green, and almost tasteless, IMO.

I would like to know the latin names of these 2. And when do avocados naturally come ripe - when are they "in season?" Is it possible to grow the good kind in 8b? Is there another avocado besides these 2 that would grow here and taste like the "regular" kind?
