How far from street should u plant?

Hi there!

Is there a rule on how far from the street a person should plant edibles? Of course, it depends on the traffic and other variables... but, is there a general rule? I'm looking to do some landscaping for a friend who has a car lot on a busy street. I'm thinking the "edible landscaping" probably not a great idea, but I told him I would look into it.

Any info. would be great, or links to where to find the info.

Lemon trees would do nicely for a car lot.

As close as possible...
For a car lot, I would not plant any thing that would distract from the cars but, invite people in. I would say magnolia or some type of big leaf tree at the street and redwood set back some along the sides. I am thinking shaded street parking with viability, and steadying winds.
