What a life,,,,,,,,

Finally after all of the back breaking work of amending the soil, learning to work with the heat and humidity, months of dry weather, months of flooding rain, I can enjoy harvests I could have never had in the North.

I feel so thankful.

Gotta love South Florida when things are clicking! You can almost watch plants move in "real time" they grow so fast.

Just keep a lookout for the insects! I was so mezmerized by the lush growth that I woke up one day to a devastated tomato and pepper patch!

Whitefly, hornworms, aphids and spider mites! They work quickly and with extreme results!

    Manny E,
We just returned from Miami Beach, Wow, if thing grow well for us, it is nothing compared to Miami.
Walking around South Beach, I was so tempted to pick up some of the coconuts from the ground, just to plant it in my garden, my husband however seems to feel that i am too much a scavenger, Oh well,,, I guess, i will just have to buy one in the store. Half the fun is ....you know...
Enjoy your place in paradise, and keep your head low when the hurricane comes to call.

Carambolas, Figs, Beautiful Bananas, Sweet Pinapples

We grow those in greenhouses up here in Washington State - as well as apples, pears, blueberries, and other fruits that have chilling requirements that those in warmer climates can't grow (at least the better varieties)

    * * * AND * * *

We do not have hurricanes to worry about!

i agree, the excitement of the hurricane season is something i could live without.
after looking for years, for a place to retire to, we selected the sarasota area. to this day, even with the heartaches of the past, there is no other place i would rather be.
Well, maybe on a montaintop in hawaii, but there are the volcanoes.
like i said there is excitement and then there is excitement....

Are you having to evacuate for Hurricane Frances too? I hear it may be a bad one :-(

We in Sarasota were spared the last time, and perhaps selfishly, but I for one hope -from the bottom of my hearth, that we will be yet again.

After months of delays with our house repair/construction, our roof is 1/2 off- or 1/2 on-
(not quite sure how to look at it,)
everything "secured" with tarp, we can do nothing but wishing and hoping.

In the meantime, i harvested 2 more pineapples, the third one was eaten by some critter before i got to it,

The plants of the ones harvested, are still in the ground, and are growing multiple plants. Should be interesting.

These hurricanes remind me of the old saying-- we live in interesting times--

Stay happy, healthy, safe, and happy gardening--

I was thinking of you and those in Florida today as I was picking apples for baking pies this afternoon. I hope the damage is minimal and your pineapples (and gardens) survive.

Where I'm at in Seattle, I'm out of the flood and Lahar areas and we usually do not get the wind like some parts of the state - nor do we lose power very often (and when we do, it's rarely out for more than an hour) We RARELY have snow storms like some parts of the country (last winter was one - 3 day - storm in about 10 years) I can do without the hurricane excitement and I'm glad I live here and not in Florida - especially when I can come in after working out in the garden to have hot apple pie fresh out of the oven.

BTW, I raise WONDERFUL figs in Seattle (outside year round) and I raise plenty of pineapples and bananas (inside) ... Working on the star fruit. Nice to have cooler weather - with a greenhouse, there is MUCH more that can be raised here than in warmer climates (just about everything from the warmer climate AND a whole lot more!)

    Dear Reinbeax
You make me feel, that i missed out on something wonderful.
With 2 hurricanes down and the 3rd barrelling down on us, I still love where i am.

Nevertheless, my lung specialist made his comments again regarding Florida/Humidity/Mold.....
    and my dependency on breathing.

It is only a habit, but one i seem unviling to break.

Nice to hear that there is someone out there who lives exactly where they want, and loving it.
    Life is good,,,

    Happy gardening,

    Irene
