Sumac heads with worms

Posted by gooseberry_guy (My Page) on

Hi,

I was going to collect some Sumac heads for jelly and Sumac-ade. I began collecting heads and then noticed what looked like worm waste in the center of each head. I pulled open the heads and found a small brown worm(s) in each head. It's been years since I had used sumac but I don't remember anything in the heads.

I was going to pick what I needed and then try and salvage the outside berries for my needs, but then decided against it because of the extra work.

Does anyone have any information as to whether these worms are just common and something always there to deal with, or if the area may have had an isolated problem?

Thanx, GG

RE: Sumac heads with worms

Hi again,

I did get a very nice personal reply from another forum member, after I contacted them about this problem and after doing a search for Sumac in Gardenweb. They were most helpful and we discussed this problem in detail.

I'm just posting now to let this slide on down to the end. Thanks.

GG
