 o
dwarf or regular citrus trees

I need to decided on whether to plant a "dwarf' setsuma tangerine tree that will reach 15 feet in height, or a dwarf that will reach between 8-10 feet. They trees are sold by two different companies and is probably grafted onto different stocks. What is the pros and cons of either? I had heard that you don't want to grow a full sized citrus tree because they will be difficult to harvest due to height, but I also don't want to grow a puny one that doesn't bear enough for a small family either. Any advice/suggestions?
Thanks so mucy

If your space is limited, go with the smaller one. My Satsumas are all under 6' tall, and are very prolific producers. No worries about having enough fruit, I give lots away.

RE: dwarf or regular citrus trees

I found a very good article from a nursery in Arizona. It intrigued me because I have very little space and an evil HOA, and Arizona is in my same zone, so what grows well there, will grow well here! Just reading this article, and all the links, inspired me to try his high density planting tips: http://www.tropicamango.com/backyardorchardculture.html

One of his points was that it is up to YOU, not the tree, how big it grows! YOU are in control! How cool is that?

I've got 4 semi-dwarf citrus ready to be planted. They are currently tied to a palm tree for support in their little nursery pots. Instead of 4 in one hole, I'll probably do 2 per hole.

He gives very specific advice for pruning and fertilizing and for how to plant. Step by step!

The frugal gardening forum here has inspired me to save my seeds from grocery store fruits, and give them a try also! I'd love a mango, a papaya, and oooohh a lichee nut tree!! I'd love to get little trees started, and sink them all close to each other. I'm thinking it's worth a try...

Good luck to all of us, and I hope you find the Naval Orange of your dreams with enough fruit for your family!!
