I am doing some commercial landscaping at a mobile home community in Madison, GA. The residents have expressed an interest in edible nut crops and I also thought pomegranates might be fun.
What pecan varieties would be good for this area?
Can you recommend any other nut crops?
Can I grow pomegranates in this climate/soil?
Do you recommend any particular types?
These trees would be planted out in a field far away from homes or utilities. They'll get watered and fertilized for perhaps 2-3 years and then they are on their own.
Madison, GA is apparently in USDA zone 7B, which is also apparently the coldest USDA zone a pomegranate will grow in, with out cold protection.
You can't always go by USDA zone stuff, because they're not always right 100% of the time, but I believe pomegranates are grown in South Carolina, which should have a similar cold season as Georgia.
I'm sure some one will come along this thread eventually that grows them there and will comment.
