I have never seen a truly self pollinating Kiwi. Be skeptical. You don't need to build the trellis until they start growing in the spring. I would build the trellis as it will need to be when the kiwis are mature. Must be strong. I built mine with 4X4 posts, two 2X6 cross beams on each post and connected them with 3 strands of 12 gage galvanized wire. The posts were secured in the ground 2 feet deep with concrete. The first year the wires drooped from the weight and I had to tighten them when I pruned them back this winter. I did not use a method for anchoring the posts to prevent leaning. That may be an error.
