chestnuts?

Merry Chirstmas, all!

I came home from the grocery a couple days ago with several sprouting chestnuts, thinking to plant them. A bit of web research indicates that these are likely to be of European or Japanese origin (the store didn't know) and therefore unlikely to be blight resistant. I have found a place in DelMarva to get potentially-resistant young trees this spring, but I'm still inclined to give these volunteers a shot.

What should I be looking for that will tell me they've got the blight? How old are they likely to be when it hits them? If the answer is just "they'll die" and "more than 5 years, but before they'll produce nuts" it may not be worth allocating space.

Any comments/experience? I posted the starter questions on Tree Forum and got no reply; I hope somebody here has tried growing chestnuts...

Thanks!

Lynn
