Any difference between native and european elderberries?

I just got a fantastic cookbook "Forgotten Skills of Cooking" written by Irish chef, Darina Allen, and there are a bunch of recipes that call for elderberries which sound delicious.

I was thinking of buying a few cultivars, I like to plant natives a lot so I was thinking of trying to get some of the native cultivars but also feel like I should honor tradition and also use European types.

Are there any differences between them? Are they both comparable in terms of flavor of berries and scent of flowers in spring? I've heard there's a type that doesn't smell good, and that cultivar is to be avoided.

Any information would be great, I'm highly curious and keen on trying.
