WANTED: care for shrubs in pots

I am looking for any type of advise anyone has to offer for maintaining shrubs in pots and window boxes. Should I trim and wire the roots as you do for bonsai to keep the shrubs small and compact? Should I just continually trim them to keep them contained? What about winter care? Any advise is appreciated.
