WANTED: Annual Southern Ontario Plant Swap/London and Area # 2

Posted by nyssaman Z6 ON (My Page) on
Thu, May 7, 09 at 13:51

I have started a few things a couple days ago - I just seem not to get enough time to get things rollin on the planting front. With My little Munchkins

I have planted:

Solanum Mammosum - Titty Fruit
Yvonne Salvia
Salvia Exserta
Carolina Jessamine
American Holly
Mixed Hibiscus
Wild Senna
Cypress Vine

I'm hoping to at least have a second set of leaves on a lot of things but we all know how planting goes. I will not trade for these yet but will let everyone know how things progress.

I also have a pup of Agave americanum
I also have some Mandevilla laxa seedlings that I am trying to nurse back to decent health - I will also let people know how they are doing. I'm sure I have a few other things.

Bill: I can't remember the road I think it is Commissioners Rd West - Main entrance of the park then take the first left - about 100 meters up on the left is where we were before (There is a little building there). If anyone else can give more specific directions to Bill that would be great.

Also have we established who is holding the park (getting there bright and early 7:30 ish AM). You need to be there that early to hold the spot they get taken very quickly.I live in St Thomas now and it is just to far me know with the kids and everything else to get there that early.

Cheers

Jeff

Mom of Three: If you were looking for some dwarf Yellow Iris I can round some up for you!! Do you have any Trillium still to trade??

Jeff: Your offering of the African lilly sounds interesting? I realize you only have the two pups but do you think it will be producing any Bulbils this summer? I did a little reading up on it and was just wondering. I can set aside the pink Tropical Hibiscus and Bergenia for you for the upcoming swap in anticipation of a later trade if that would be OK. Thanks. Ross

gg/Lois

 o
RE: WANTED: Annual Southern Ontario Plant Swap/London and Area #

Greylady Gardener: I have a moonshine yarrow set aside for you...do you still have a peachleafed bellflower left?

Nyssaman: I have a regal calla and an easter egg plant set aside for you. Impatiens niamniamensis sound interesting! Your plants sound very exotic so let me know if this is a fair trade. Also, I live about two hours away from Springbank Park in London so I would probably have a difficult time reserving the spot for the day. Sorry.

Mom of Three: I have 'Karl Foerster' grass- (a well behaved yet nice ornamental grass) and may have a lilac seedling (small-will be either purple or white flower)... I would be interested in your Giant Grey striped sunflower.

 o

if someone really really wants an african lily pup, I can bow out of that trade. I keep telling myself I want to keep my life simple and I always end up with things that I have to take care of all winter only to usually have them succumb just before they could be put outside for the summer . So Ross or Greylady if you want the african lily I dont mind getting something else .

Signet

 o
RE: WANTED: Annual Southern Ontario Plant Swap/London and Area #

Rosco: interested in a bronze leaved canna (mine literally bit the dust.) Is there something on my list that you would like? Or perhaps I have something not listed that we could swap?

Signet: Is there anything on my list that would interest you in exchange for a yellow primrose and a dame's rocket?

Hi Ross,

Yup Ross , setting those two aside for you ! Thanks so much ! Whoo hoo! I love trading !

By the way Ross , what are the growing conditions needed for Kerria ? I have one I got from you about 3 or 4 years ago in a trade we did . It is about 4 inches tall after all this time ( I actually thought I lost it !) ....Seems it is not doing well where it is ....gonna have to move it .

.....I just had a friend arrive with a truckload of plants from the local hort sale. All leftovers. I am not sure yet what is there but if anything good I will post . These wont be for trades . If once I post what is in the pile of plants, anyone is interested in what is there, they are welcome to have them . Will prepare a list maybe tomorrow ....tooo darn cold out there right now !

thanks,

SIGNET: I don't coddle the Kerria. I have it growing in Part Sun and it seems to do great. Maybe I gave you a dud. If you would like another piece of it I can set one aside for you to try in another spot in your landscape. It should grow a lot faster than what you are experiencing. I cut mine back every year to keep it in check and it is a wonderful looking shrub. Get back to me if you want another piece. No trade necessary. Ross.

LOIS; Thanks for confirming our trade. Your welcome. Ross.

I'll volunteer to hold the park area at 7:30 a.m.-- I can stay over in London on the Saturday.

Also, I just potted up some volunteers from my Eremurus bungei (Foxtail Lilies). The mama plants are various muted colours-- mostly yellow and peach.

There are four pots with six lily babies per pot. They will need to be separated and potted up at the end of May, and when they outgrow the four-inch pots, it's into a nursery bed for at least one year. They will bloom in the third year.

These lilies are absolute knockouts. Four to five feet tall in my garden with long-lasting blooms, no staking needed. They require perfect drainage and a fertile soil in full sun. They are "heavy feeders" so you'll need to give them some extra care.

These are expensive to buy as roots and they're pretty much impossible to get at a nursery. So, for the patient person with the right garden, these could become a real treasure.

I'm open to trades for things I don't already have. I'd love to have a cutting from a Fothergilla, if anyone is growing it. Or maybe a rhododendron.

Bev

Hey Jeff, Too bad I already have tuberose "the pearl" and it's not a happy gal. The nights are just too cold in the sunroom and the poor thing just doesn't know what to do.

I'm looking for some Stachys byzantium (bunny ears) in the white/silver colour, with no or few flowers-- like "Helen von Stein" or "Silver Carpet".

Also looking for some seedlings of Verbena bonariensis, Cilantro, Primrose missouriensis. Also, a division or rooted cutting of Prunus triloba (flowering almond).

Adding to my list (until Saturday, when they get put in our local plant sale):
- lemon thyme "doone valley"
- golden oregano
- mother of thyme
- creeping golden jenny
- phuopsis/crosswort
- antennaria/pussytoes (less than 2", mat-forming)
- orlaya "white lace" three seedlings
- moluccella laevis / bells of ireland
- sunflower "earthwalker"
- penstemon digitalis "violet dusk" seedlings

- Bev

 o
bev

Hi Bev, I am not sure if I have seedlings as I haven't checked in a while, but I am pretty sure that I still have a few seeds left over for verbena bonariensis. I planted them last year and loved them. I shook the seed heads and was hoping for lots of seedlings as I heard that it was a great reseeder. This year I didn't WS them so am hoping that they did reseed. Would you like to have seeds, or maybe I could start some for you. I am probably going to plant some anyway as I really do want it in the garden again.

Hi all,

Well finally I have been granted access to this page again . I couldnt get access for 3 days . And is anyone else having to click the box that say you are being transferred to an unsecure site 5 times when you try to log in ? What a pain in the ass!( are we allowed to say ass? I guess I will find out !)

Anyway . plants brought here the other day ....nothing new nothing exciting unfortunately ...there is some lambs ear, some sedum ,a few daylilies but no idea what they are they are as they are not marked.

Lovinlife : confirmed trade Siloam, Trahlyta, Poet's Narcissus and Thornless Blackberry.

MOT : I can get you some Rose of Sharon seedlings if you want . Wont know if they are white with red center or pinkypurple with red center but I can get you as many as you want but they will be only about 5 or 6 inches tall .

Bev: I owe you a trade for the gogi berry seeds ( none came up unfortuately )..I am so disappointed ...but never the less I owe you something for that trade back in the winter . Is there something on my list that you might consider ?
If you can think of something you would like in trade I would also love to try your - lemon thyme "doone valley" and golden oregano as well as your Eremurus bungei (Foxtail Lilies)and phuopsis/crosswort (lost mine ...is yours a pink flower ?) . I will try to find a small rhodo for you but would need you to pick other items please. Your Downy woodmint I got last year has gone mad! It is lovely.

Greylady: need you to pick something other than Stilletto . When I dug it up ( it was very tiny but just fell apart in my hand ...no more Stilletto :?( )
adding to my trade list :

Wild garlic
Downy Woodmint
Lamb's Ears

Signet/Heather: I just took a cutting from the tallest of my five goji plants, which all survived the winter. If it strikes, it's yours. Re: Eremurus. Do you have a sandy area, or a high raised bed to put these in? I seem to recall you're in clay, which will be certain death for the Eremurus. They require perfect drainage. Constant wetness, especially in winter, is fatal.
re: Doone Valley Thyme, Golden Oregano and Phuopsis. I will trade these three for a clump of your Maianthemum stellatum (Starry False Solomons Seal) and Verbascum phoeniceum. LMK.

MoT: I might have to remove the Earthwalker sunflower from my list. They were left on the porch last night and really took a beating from the rain and wind. Two look like goners, but we'll see. But there is still time to start more. Nothing on your list jumps out at me, but I don't mind giving you a couple. Next year you'll have more/better swap offerings and we can even things up.

Bev, Ah! bless your heart ! I have my fingers crossed for that gogi berry cutting lol ! As for the Eremurus , Yes I actually do have a raised bed out the front of the house ...12 inches deep and It is black rich earth in there and well drained .

I will put aside some Starry false solomon's seal and the verbascum phonecium too. I do have some real Solomon seal if that interests you more . I also do have primrose but not sure if it is missouriensis .It grows about 12 to 15 inches tall and I just looked up pics of missouriensis and they look idential to the primrose I have , yellow blossom ....I have had these for about 20 years back in a time where I didnt know much about gardening and so didnt record what "type" they were If you would like some I can pot them up for you too. If they arent what you are looking for , there is always a friend you can give them to or the compost ! !!! LMK if you would be interested in some .I have oodles!

Greylady : thanks for understanding ...ajuga "chocolate chip it is then . Thanks

Jeff: Not sure if I got my original cutting of holly from you ...but after about 3 years of sitting quietly it is actually blooming !!!!! ( who knew holly bloomed yellow ...I didnt) Can I trade you for another holly cutting . I have read you need both male and female plant to get berries, do you know if this is true?

Adding to my trade list :

primrose (yellow tall) not the same as spring primrose
1 rooted Pussywillow cutting
Canna ( yellow I think , I have to check LOL! )
Yellow loosestrife

Does anyone have any costmary aka the Bible Herb to share . I have had that herb here for years .....this year it did not come back ?? not sure why but would like to replace it if possible

As I told everyone before I am not very smart when it comes to plants and there names. I am looking for some ground cover that has little light purple or really dark pink blooms. I have some with light pink blooms that I could add to my list.

Signet - The only Holly I might have given you is Winterberry - the native Ilex - I don't have this anymore - The flower may be yellow I cannot remember - the fruit will be red. I am trying to grow some American Holly - Ilex opaca but nothing yet. I thought I would give you a heads up that the Solanum mammosum - titty fruit) has not germinated yet either - the seeds might be to old.

Hi All,

Jeff, I dont think I gotthe holly from you then, I did some checking online and the native ilex has a different leaf than my holly does . My holly leaf looks like the holly you see in pics at Christmas .

Bev: I was in a nursery today and I saw seeds for primrose missourienses aka evening primrose . That is exactly what I have oodles of so let me know how many you would like. I have hundreds.

I also have a cowslip for you . No luck on a rhodo yet though .

RE: WANTED: Annual Southern Ontario Plant Swap/London and Area #

Today I found a couple of straggling Virginia creeper - I have potted them up in small pots - I think they should take but no guarantee.I will also have some divisions of cup plant and also what I'm pretty sure is Fireweed - Epilobium angustifolium. I have come down with the flu and so has the rest of the family, I feel like I'm on the other side of it now though..

So

2 pots Virginia Creeper
3 or so Fire weed
2 divisions of cup plant
Also I should have 2 small tropical milkweed seedlings (Asclepias curassavica)

cheers

Jeff

RE: WANTED: Annual Southern Ontario Plant Swap/London and Area #

Nice day to be out in the garden! Hacking back a jungle area that has gone a bit overgrown, and discovered my poor double orange daylily. It is the mommy plant that I have taken a few divisions of for other parts of my yard, and so since I already have it in a couple of other places, I am now looking for a new home for this one. 8-)

 o
RE: WANTED: Annual Southern Ontario Plant Swap/London and Area #

Well that was good!! I just went back out to deal with a bit more of the jungle and the neighbour's visitor was very interested in the lily. It is now on its' way to its' new home along with some nice tall phlox, so take the double orange lily off my list.

 o
RE: Annual Southern Ontario Plant Swap/London and Area # 2

You will all be missed if you are not there.......

Are we going to eat or not? Just want to make sure of what is happening. If we are we need to make some plans.

Signet/Heather: The first goji cutting has failed so I will try again now that the plants have leafed out a bit more. It turns out that I've planted these waaaay to close together, so I'm going to have to expand the bed and give them each more room. It may be possible to separate some side shoots. Apparently they are a suckering shrub, but they're awfully young to be spreading.
re: Primrose missouriensis-- If you can spare three that would be great.

Hi all,
May I suggest that we try for a "no garbage" picnic potluck? If everyone brings their own plates, glasses and utensils we won't be generating landfill and no one will get saddled with the cost of buying plastic stuff.

I'll bring a vat of my world-famous baked beans that will keep your belly happy and full for days.

they have just recently sprouted and are approx an inch high right now.

Hi GG: re: Hunnemannia. These were erratic this year. Only one container germinated and they are going very slowly. I am hoping to transplant into 3" pots tomorrow-- they are still far too small to go in the ground. With all this heat I hope they'll start growing. So I can't really spare any. My advice would be steady warmth, especially at night. Our sunroom was too cold at night this year, and it really set back the annuals.

I will also pot up some butterfly weed for you.

Hello all,
I'm sorry I'm so late to post this trade list, I'll understand if I'm too late. I have to move the front 3.25 metres of flower garden this spring to get out of the way of city work crews putting in new water/sewer mains, so it's been a bit busy here. Anyhow here's my trade list, I'll post my wishes in a separate post. Many of these are the same as last year, but there are a few new people coming this year so hopefully they'll find takers!

pinky purple cranesbill geranium
lamb's ears
kitten's ears - hot pink rose campion

RE: WANTED: Annual Southern Ontario Plant Swap/London and Area #

Hello again,

Here's my very belated list of wishful trades:

Gardeng8: I'd love some of your monkshood, Karl Forster grass if you have any left, obsidian heuchera, WS siberian wallflower (mine didn't germinate :-(, or especially Yvonne's salvia - only 3 of mine germinated and 2 are tiny.

Greylady-gardener: Do you still have the virginia bluebell? I saw them in Stratford and they're gorgeous! How about the honeysuckle vine? I owe you a trade from last year for the buddleia Black Knight ws seedling.

Signet: I still owe you a trade from last year, since the Black Knight butterfly bush didn't survive. I hope something in my trade list tempts you, so I might trade for your mini purple iris (perhaps my white cleome), or the unknown name red daylily, or yellow canna.

Rosco_P: I'd love another kerria division, the one I got last year from you is doing well, and they light up the spring garden. Did your cardinal climber pull through? mine got done in by a frost. I'd also love more monkshood or dwarf yellow iris, if you find attractive things on my list.

Flowergirl_ON
Do you still have some of your tall white phlox, leopard's bane, white peach-leaved bellflower, aster tongolensis Star of Wartburg or white datura available?

Nyssaman: Do you still have Yvonne's salvia on offer? My 4 last year put on a great show, I planted 25 seeds but only got 1 large and 2 small ones.

Frogged: I'd love some of your yellow iris - I had around a thousand iris blooms last year, sadly I can't trade any since I've got iris root borer.

Mom-of-Three: Do you want more rose of Sharon? I have some 4-5" tall ones that are either white or pink with a burgundy centre that I'll happily give you.

Thanks everyone for reading these long late posts, and I'm looking forward to seeing you, even if only for the gambler's circle. Do we have numbers yet? I was thinking of bringing crusty Portuguese rolls to go with Bev's baked beans.

Guess who !

Yup me again. I wanted to let Bill1 know that I was digging up the ground phlox for MOT and discovered another little clump of Twist of Lime so I will take off a small division for you .

MOT : potted up some pale purple ground phlox for you but would recommend you to leave it in the pot for about a month and keep well watered so that it can develope some good roots . It does have some but it was growing out of an ant hill so the dirt around it had been excavated by the ants and the roots arent as great as I would like them to be thus the recommendation to leave in pot for a while . Normally I would pot up at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance of the swap but that is not possible this time .

RE: WANTED: Annual Southern Ontario Plant Swap/London and Area #

Hi people, here's a silly question - when is the swap this year? It's been a busy spring, just thought to check the forums tonight! If it's not too late, I can offer

- a very large clump of Miscanthus 'Malepartus'
- some medium sized Helleborus foetidus divisions
- One each, male and female Ilex verticillata (Winterberry) ie native deciduous holly
- large to medium Jack in the Pulpit (several)
- dwarf purple bearded iris ( 6 inches tall), possibly called 'Darth Vadar' - one fair-sized clump

I'm looking for shade plants as usual - Aconitum, Carex, native perennials, etc.

See you!~

Hello again all,

Wow!! Thanks so much for the trades everyone! Please double check that I've got the details right from all the posts:

Gardeng8 I'm looking forward to your: monkshood, Karl Forster grass, obsidian heuchera, ws siberian wallflower and Yvonne's salvia (any chance that you could find more to trade so I could get a 2nd or 3rd one? I'm getting some from Jeff too, but if possible I'd like to have enough to put some in my front yard too to give the other hummer in the neighbourhood somewhere to drink (she gets chased off by my regular gal), I'd give up the heuchera for that :-). I have you down for my: dark blue agastache, Hummingbird red nicotiana, sweet william pinochio, and hot pink cranesbill geranium.

greylady-gardener/lois: I'm excited about the virginia bluebell and honeysuckle vine, do you have any more of the: short (approx one foot) iris-plain yellow. I have the following set aside for you: spiderwort navaho princess,
sweet william pinnochio, gaillardia burgundy, agastache Heather Queen

signet/heather: I have us down as trading your: mini purple iris, unknown name red lily, yellow canna, and hopefully you still have some of the medium height dark purple iris or

rosco_P: I have us down for trading your monkshood and kerria for my: sundrops, Lorraine sunshine. Is there anything else in my list that you would like in exchange for a 2 or 3 cardinal climbers?

flowergirl_on/Merja: Thanks for the trade of your:tall white phlox, leopard's bane, white peachleaved bellflower, aster tongolensis star of wartburg, and white datura for my:
lavatera Mont Blanc, giant snapdragons - chunks, cerinthe major, Monet's Choice orange cosmos, and Hummingbird red nicotiana

nyssaman Jeff - Thanks for setting aside a couple of Yvonne's salvia for me I don't know what gives with my germination of these, the salvia coccinea pretty much all germinated in the same conditions !? I've set aside a couple of the cerinthe major for you, I got the seeds on a trade as a darker blue than the usual one.

frogged: Yes I do have Signet Lemon marigolds - they are supposed to be pretty bushy with single yellow flowers I'll set some aside for your yellow iris

barb from london: Welcome back! On the off chance that there is something of interest on my list I'd love some of your: dwarf purple iris - possibly darth vader.

Mom of Three: I'd love some of your manure if there is any left, yellow daylilies, sunflower Carol - 3 if possible, or pink ground phlox if you have another division, for my: dark purple columbine, gaillardia blanket flower, hot pink climbing rose, groundcover sedum Dragon's blood, Hummingbird Red nicotiana, and some rose of Sharon.

Bev_W: Do you have any Red cypress vine Ipomoea quamoclit (seedlings in 3" pots) left? I spring sowed them but they succumbed to something... I'd love 2 or 3 if possible, if not I'd like some Verbena (blue, perennial, ground-cover type, gorgeous) or Phlox paniculata (seedling of 'David") or either: Penstemon whippleanus "Chocolate Drop", Penstemon smallii "Violet Dusk" I have a bunch of white cleome and 2 cuphea starlet set aside for you, does anything else of mine tempt you?

Thanks to everyone for the great trades! It's like Christmas to me to get such wonderful stuff.

Cheers,
Heather/Blueiris3

Bev_ W: I will bring a flowering almond (very small division) and white anemone (spring flowering) for you.

Blueiris 3: I'll pot up what I have left of the yvonne's salvia. (Again, they are still small as they were seed sown this spring) I have planted mine out just a few days ago.

Looking forward to meeting everyone! Hope the weather cooperates! (fingers crossed)
