Hi Heather!

The tickseed grew in my backyard in the deep shade. Under a really straggly overgrown tree. The only thing else growing there is Lily of the Valley.

I can't tell you the variety of tickseed, Im afraid. Only that when I moved into the house, I pointed it out to my mother who is a gardener and she said with some certainty, 'Thats Tickseed'.

It blooms yellow. And gets fairly tall. I want to say 4 feet... that might have something to do with the location. (Reaching for light?) And seems to be a happy plant anywhere. I moved some to other locations when I dug up for trades. And they seem to be happy so far.

I'm sorry I can't give you more information on this. I looked myself and couldn't find that type of leaf for 'Tickseed'. I'll keep my eyes peeled, and query Mom about it again. I can't promise an answer though. She has her good days and bad.

Thanks for the info! I'll point the plant out to a neighbour who's excellent at ID-ing plants and let you know what I find out. Sorry to hear about your Mom. For now I've put it in bright morning shade with at least 2.5 hours of afternoon sun. From your description it should be ok there, provided it isn't allergic to black walnut roots.

Sadly that's not it. This plant has huge leaves, quite high off the ground - about 2 feet up. Thanks for the link to robs plants - that's a great site. I'm pretty sure it's a rudbeckia, the leaves are a lot like this plant

Rudbeckia Laciniata. However on my plant the two side leaves have two sub parts, in addition to the 3 lobes of the centre part. Thankfully, my reference book says that laciniata has anywhere from 3 - 7 lobes to it's leaves. (Random House Book of Perennials, volume 2 late perennials)

Didzgarden - is this the single or double flowered form? Roughly how wide are the flowers? The book says they can be anywhere from 7.5 - 15 cm wide.

Rudbeckia laciniata is a single flowered native species, small yellow flowers on a rather tall plant. 'Golden Glow' is the double flowered form. They both spread into large patches.
