HAVE: Epipactis helleborine
aka broad leaf helleborine. This is a terresstial orchid that can survive our winters here. It is not a native orchid (though it has been here for centuries) and is thought to have been introduced from Europe. It is supposed to have the ability to become invasive but it has not proven so for me. Beside, I wouldn't mind having a patch of wild orchids, but that's just my way of thinking. The bloom is a stem with small orchid flowers surrounding it (sort of like how the blooms are arranged on a hollyhock). I found these orchids in the space between the deck and the fence and have successfully moved plants from there into my garden and all have survived (for about a month now). Looking for anything 'unusual' or 'something that you wouldn't typically find at the garden center' There are great pictures here:
