If you let the Trillium seeds dry they will not germinate. Pick the seed pods just when starting to break open and pack in moist vermiculite in a plastic baggy. Or break open the pod, spread seeds on a triple folded moist paper towel, fold the towel over the seeds and pack all into a plastic baggy. Mail the baggy.

Origami master: When you receive the seeds, keep them in the moist towel and baggy at room temperature for 60 days. Then place it in the fridge for a least 90 days.

After coming out of the fridge, sow the seeds in a seed tray and keep at room temperature, keeping moist but not wet until autumn 2007. Place the seed tray in a large baggy, seal it and place in the fridge again for the winter. In the spring of 2008, take the tray out and you should see germination a few weeks after returning to room temperature.

If this is too much work, you can simply sow the moist seed as soon as you receive it into the ground, wait two years and let Mother Nature do the work.

Trillim has "double dormancy" and needs this process to germinate. The seedlings will take 5 to 7 years after germination to bloom.
