HAVE: Second Annual Tomato and Pepper Seed Exchange

Posted by hmacdona Zone 3a Calgary (My Page) on
Sun, Aug 16, 09 at 0:54

Hi everyone,

I am hosting another Tomato and Pepper seed swap that will include members from a few different forums. I wanted to post this a bit early so you had time to collect seeds or place an order. Here are the guidelines we will follow for this swap.

1) Seeds must be received by me no later than October 30th, so I recommend you mail your envelope no later than October 20th.

You can send "named varieties" of tomatoes or peppers (or both). Do not include mixes or seeds labeled "granny's mystery mix" or anything like that. I cannot, in fairness, send mixed or unknown packs of seed back to people that followed the instructions and only sent in "named varieties".

2) A minimum of 10 seeds per packet. A maximum of 5 packets of the same seed. An overall maximum of 30 packets per person.

Please ensure seed packets are clearly marked with the name, and whether they are heirloom, OP, or hybrids. If you are sending pepper seeds, it would help me a great deal with sorting if you could indicate if the peppers are sweet or hot as many individuals in the last swap had clear preferences. If seeds are from a commercial source, please note that as well.

3) If you send tomato seeds, you will receive tomato seeds in return. The same idea for peppers, unless you include a note indicating you are open to receiving either in return.

4) Please include a list of what you are sending, your wish list and if there are any seeds you do
not want to receive. If you are only interested in heirloom or OP, please tell me that as well. I will try my best to accommodate your wish list, but there are no guarantees of course. The variety will be completely dependent on what is sent in. In last year's swap, we were able to fill many items on people's wish lists so please take the time to prepare one - it will be worth your while.

5) You will need to mail your seeds along with $1.18 in return postage. If you are sending 10 or less seed packets, you should be fine just mailing in a regular envelope with seeds wrapped in tissue (I am happy to provide the return envelope in this case). If you are sending more than 10 seed packets, I would recommend you send a bubble envelope and I will reuse the same bubble envelope to return your surprise seeds to you.

6) If you change your mind after registering, and no longer wish to participate, please please
Please notify me immediately so we do not delay the swap waiting for your seeds to arrive.
This will also save me a great deal of time trying to follow up and track people down.

7) I will email you privately with my mailing address once you have posted here to sign up for this swap. You must make sure that your gardenweb profile has your email address attached so I can contact you. Please check this before signing up for this swap.

Any questions. Please let me know. Let's have fun trading!!!!

Thanks……Heather

NOTE - I WILL BE ON VACTION FROM AUGUST 21ST TO AUGUST 31ST AND WILL NOT BE RESPONDING TO EMAIL DURING THAT TIME

RE: HAVE: Second Annual Tomato and Pepper Seed Exchange

Count me in, Heather! I was so delighted with my experience last year that I will gladly participate in this one as well.

 o
RE: HAVE: Second Annual Tomato and Pepper Seed Exchange

Sign me up as well. I really enjoyed the round robin this spring.

 o
RE: HAVE: Second Annual Tomato and Pepper Seed Exchange

I would really love to participate, but not sure how the rest of the season will go. It has been an awful year for tomatoes so far. I hope they kick in and start looking like they will actually produce some ripe tomatoes before frost. I will try and let you know as soon as I can. :)

 o
RE: HAVE: Second Annual Tomato and Pepper Seed Exchange

The signups are coming in fast. Wow. 22 signed up so far and we just started yesterday. We even have someone as far away as South Africa participating. I bet we get some interesting varieties from there.

It's been a crazy year greylady-gardener. I do hope your tomatoes cooperate and you decide to join us.

Any lurkers out there???....come on and join us....you know you want to :)

 o
RE: HAVE: Second Annual Tomato and Pepper Seed Exchange

A quick update.....we're up to 35 participants (so far).

The more the merrier...more people...more variety...that's my philosophy :)

 o
RE: HAVE: Second Annual Tomato and Pepper Seed Exchange

Im really interested in growing some more hot peppers next year and am thinking i may participate but i have a few questions if possible: I only have maybe 2-3 diff variety's of peppers if i send 3 packets does that mean i will receive 3 different packages of seeds? I have no idea sorry for the stupid question.

 o
RE: HAVE: Second Annual Tomato and Pepper Seed Exchange

Hi Jerem,

Not a stupid question at all. You are correct. If you send in 3 packs of pepper seeds, you will get three different packs of pepper seeds in return.

In fact, if you have lots of each kind, you could do even better. You could send up to 5 packs of each type of pepper seed and you would get 15 different packs of pepper seed in return. You could even mix it up and ask for some tomato seeds back if you like.

All I ask is that you do not send in more than 5 packs of any one type of tomato or pepper seed and that each pack contains a minimum of 10 seeds.

Hope this helps. I just sent you a private email as well.

Let me know if you have any more questions.

Thanks....Heather

 o
RE: HAVE: Second Annual Tomato and Pepper Seed Exchange

RE: HAVE: Second Annual Tomato and Pepper Seed Exchange

Welcome Ianna. Details were emailed to you earlier today. Please get in touch with me if you did not receive my email.

Thanks...Heather

 o
RE: HAVE: Second Annual Tomato and Pepper Seed Exchange

83 and climbing. I'm already starting to get seeds in the mail. A nice variety too!

 o
RE: HAVE: Second Annual Tomato and Pepper Seed Exchange

A quick note about wish lists. If it's easier for you, and you already have your tomato or pepper wish list up to date on your gardenweb profile, just indicate that in a note inside the envelope you mail and I'll go to your gardenweb wish list for reference.

I should have mentioned that earlier...sorry.

We're up to 86 participants.

 o
RE: HAVE: Second Annual Tomato and Pepper Seed Exchange

We're up to 91 participants. Still room for more :)

 o
RE: HAVE: Second Annual Tomato and Pepper Seed Exchange

96 participants. Come join in the fun! Must get to 100....must get to 100 :)

We're up to 104 participants.

 o
RE: HAVE: Second Annual Tomato and Pepper Seed Exchange

Hi everyone,

I had a couple of private e-mails asking if there was a minimum number of packets that had to be sent in.

I thought it would be worth posting a note here to confirm that there is no minimum number of packets. We do have a maximum of 30 to keep within postage limits.

The only minimum is that your seed count per seed packet must be at least 10 seeds.

Hope this helps for any lurkers that have been thinking about joining and haven't dived in yet.

We're up to 106 participants !!!!

Thanks...Heather

 o
RE: HAVE: Second Annual Tomato and Pepper Seed Exchange

We're up to 112 participants.

I'm still accepting signups until about mid October. I will post a note when signups have been closed off.

For those that have already signed up, feel free to send your seeds in early if you have them ready to go. No need to hang on to them until close to the deadline. I'm getting some in now and sorting as we go along.

For those in the US and overseas, you'll need to allow about two weeks for mailing time, so plan to mail your seeds no later than October 15th to get them here by the deadline.

Thanks....Heather

 o
RE: HAVE: Second Annual Tomato and Pepper Seed Exchange

Hi everyone,

I received an email question and thought it would be worth posting a note to clarify in case anyone else is wondering the same thing.

On point #3 of the swap guidelines...where I mention you will receive tomatoes for tomatoes or peppers for peppers unless you include a note indicating you are open to receiving either in return.

What I meant by that, is that if you send in tomatoes, and i do not receive a note indicating that you want any peppers, I will assume you want all tomatoes and will only send those back in return. Visa versa, if you send in peppers and do not state an alternative preference, I will have to assume you want all peppers, and will only send those in return.

You can also send in tomato seeds and ask for pepper seeds in return, or any combination that works for you. Or send in pepper seeds and say you'd like tomato seeds in return, or any combination. I will do my best to follow your preferences.

I believe with the level of participation we have in this swap, the variety will automatically be there to allow the flexibility for getting different combinations of seeds returned to you according to your personal preferences.

I hope this helps to clarify. Later tonight I will edit the wording in the swap guidelines to make it clearer.

Thanks and please let me know if you have any questions.

.....Heather

Update

What a great variety of seeds we've received so far.

Even though we're just starting to get envelopes in (I've received envelopes from 22 out of 130 participants so far)...we've received 131 different kinds of tomatoes and 83 different kinds of peppers. That's not counting any bonus seeds that were sent in from a couple of very generous donors.

From what I've seen so far, our variety is going be even greater than last years swap.

If you've been lurking but haven't joined us yet, you still have until October 15th to sign up for this swap, provided you can mail your seeds, no later than October 20th (if you are in Canada). I must receive your seeds by October 30th.

Thanks.....Heather

 o

Have a few more still drying so will package up later this week.

Bonus Eggplant Seeds

Hi everyone,

A very kind donor has sent in some eggplant seeds as bonuses. I realize that not everyone grows eggplant, so here's what we're going to do...

If you'd like eggplant seeds, of the varieties listed below, can you let me know your top four picks in order of preference. How many you receive will be dependant on how many respondents in the swap (including other forums).

I will be giving them out on a first come first serve basis, keeping in mind, my goal is to try to share something with everyone that's interested.

Here's the list:

•Rosa Bianca (75 DTM) - Italian Heirloom. Very Mild. Georgeous white & light purple.
•Kermit (60 DTM) - 2" round Green Thai variety. Green/white stripes.
•Pingtung (65 DTM) - Up to 12". Very productive. Heat and humidity tolerant
•Black Beauty (80 DTM) - nearly 100 years old and still hard to beat. Large dark purple/black.
•Prosperosa (73DTM) - Italian Heirloom. Mild, productive, medium size. Dark purple/white cap.
•Slim Jim (60 DTM) - Long, Thin. Harvest at 5". Italian, very early and prolific.
•Fengyuan Purple (65 DTM) - Slendeer to 12". Thin skin.
•Florida High Bush (85 DTM) - large to 10". Tall plants keeps fruit off the ground.

Thanks...Heather

P.S. Either send me a private message or post here if interested. It doesn't matter either way.

The official last day for new signups will be October 14th (I will not be able to respond to anyone on the 15th, so had to make the deadline a day earlier than planned).

Or, if you don't have a wish list, but keep a "have" list, feel free to send that to me so I know what you've already got in your stash. If it's easier for you to send me the information by email attachment, my email address is located in the original "welcome" message I sent you. I also received another envelope that I do not know who they belong to as the note inside did not include member id. I've contacted everyone who I know has the first name "Marie", but there are several "Marie's" in this swap, so I'm hoping to solve that mystery shortly. I match envelopes by id, so I know who we've received seeds from and who we're waiting for. For the most part, people only correspond with member ids, so these mystery envelopes are always fun puzzles to solve.

Mystery #2 - no name, address or anything on the envelope. No note of any kind inside the envelope. Mailed from somewhere overseas on Oct 16th. These words were written on postage label "Leuven Centrum". There are several folks oveseas participating in this swap. I haven't got a clue. We're still waiting on seven envelopes to arrive from people that have confirmed they have been mailed. I'm going to reach out to those folks later today to see if they can send me a list of what they sent as well as their wish list. I would expect to receive those envelopes sometime next week.

I may have to hold back some of your envelopes if we're waiting on seeds that are on your wish lists.

Also, as a heads up, I am likely going to have to swap a bunch of envelopes and send some of the seeds back in a different bubble envelope. Some of the envelopes sent in were much larger than the maximum size quoted in the guidelines and a few are a wee bit too small to get all the seeds in and still meet the thickness limits for lettermail. I hope you didn't have your heart set on seeing that original envelope again :)

Thanks Heather

Yesterday, I received your envelope full of wonderful varieties of peppers! I am as excited as for the first exchange last year, Heather!!!

Thank you so much for organizing such an event. I hope that next summer is more pleasant to gardeners than this last summer, it rained all July except for one day!!! and everybody knows that in Canada there are 2 seasons: winter and the month of July..

Thanks also to all those who participated in this exchange. It should be fun to have pictures of all your peppers in full growth next year. I would love to see that!

RE: HAVE: Second Annual Tomato and Pepper Seed Exchange

Today I mailed envelopes back to:

* josh09
* rdback
* roper2008
* sagg30

The envelopes went in the mailbox Sunday, but will be picked up by the postal truck Monday November 16th.

That's the last of the envelopes for gardenweb members.

Thanks everyone for your participation and for making this swap fun for everyone involved.

A big thank you to those individuals that sent in extra seeds to be given to you as bonuses. Isn't it great to open an envelope and get a little surprise you weren't expecting?

I'm off to Toronto on business next week and will not be responding to personal email while I'm away. For those that have not yet received your envelope, please remember, it will normally take a couple of weeks for mail from Canada. All mailing dates for envelopes have been posted in this forum. Please check here for your mailing date instead of emailing me directly for that information.

Thanks so much and I look forward to doing this again next year.

......Heather

I see the receipt of my package on 19 Oct but do not see a return mailing going out nor an email. Hope it is an oversight and the package will arrive unannounced. It may also be that my requested varieties were no of the offered and I became a contributor.
The exchange is still a good idea. Thanks for your effort.
I'll try again next trade.

Hi organicdan,

Your envelope was mailed back to you in the November 12th batch.

Sorry for the oversight. I see now, I didn't write your name on that posting, but I updated my spreadsheet to indicate that was the date yours were mailed. You should get your seeds next week sometime.

Thanks....Heather
