WANTED: Hosta seed

Posted by penny9480 3 (My Page) on

Hi,
Have just discovered the virtues of hostas, and would like to find seed from any of the varieties of hostas to plant in shaded areas on the north side of the house.
I don't have anything to trade, but would certainly send out a self addressed envelope to cover shipping costs.
Thanks

Hey Penny,

It may interest you to know that Hostas do not come true from seeds......

Part of their charm and appeal - the surprise factor :-)

penny - I have some Hostas going to seed, but they're not ready yet. If you want some for SASE, email me.

I agree. I grew some June and Katherine Lewis seedlings this year. None of them of course look anything like the pod parent, but it's fun to see what you end up with. Last year I did some Revolution/Minuteman seeds and the 3 I kept are now flowering. Year before that it was Ginko Craig seeds, which have resulted in some quite vigorous seedlings I hope to be able to use next year in some crosses I'd like to try..... And I cannot wait until I get to see what this year's lone Blue Mouse Ears pod will give me in terms of seedlings....

RE: WANTED: Hosta seed germination

Just a quick follow-up Penny. There's an article I have posted on my website, written by Bill Nash and posted with his blessing, which deals with Hosta seed germination and more importantly how to increase germination rates.
