WANTED: Looking for a Native Plants Online order source. new je

Hi,

I live in northern New Jersey. I'm looking for excellent Native Plant nurseries, etc to find native new jersey plants and trees. Since most will be too far to drive to, I am mostly looking for Native Plant nurseries/farms, etc. that have an online inventory of their plants and can mail them to me.

Any recommendations? (I've looked into a few through searching online).

Steven

Hi Steven,
Try this nursery, they're in WA, but have an extensive inventory on most native plants and their prices aren't bad. http://www.bigdipperfarm.com

GrowNative is made by the Missouri Department of Conservation, not only does their site provide a huge listing of native plants, they also have a nice listing of online retailers who would ship to you

Here is a link that might be useful: GrowNative

I can vouch for Pinelands Nursery but they are wholesale only. Have you checked out:

Sunlight Gardens has a good rating on gardenwatchdog.com; the other one isn't rated yet.

For herbaceous plants, I highly recommend Toadshade Wildflower Farm.

www.Woodlanders.net. Most of their stuff is geared to the Southeast and a lot is not native, but if you look you will find things that grow in NJ (I'm originally from Morristown). I have purchased from them before.
The other thing is to check out the website for the native plant society in states near you. They all post links to reputable nurseries that sell native plants. Check out http://www.npsnj.org/links.htm.
Also http://www.bartramsgarden.org/. They have an annual sale, as does University of Delaware and many other botanical gardens.

Your best bet is to find as local a source as possible,The best quality plants with genotypes suitable for your area, are to be found locally in the wild. They are seldom available for sale.Wild plants are much more vigorous than store bought and are an authentic part a habitate restoration project.I never bought a plant from a nursery that I didn't want to tear out later, and a few non-natives turned out to be major headaches.Check to see whats growing on your property already. All you may need to do is some transplanting.

I have had a terrible experience with sunlight gardens. They advertised plants they didn't have, and wouldn't say when they would get more, and the owner is not nice to deal with. I can't recommend them.

Hello :)

Possibly this will help you in New Jersey - www.Fedcoseeds.com is very conscious of their offerings and is a very reputable company here in Maine. If you telephone or email they will send any of the catalogs you would like - trees, herbs, tubers...

Recently I was been able to find a list sorted by soil/sun needs of the Native Maine plants at www.maine.gov, makes me wonder if New Jersey offers a convenient list for you as well or if any on the Maine site would help you, if yoiu are looking for that also. We are finally living our dream and I found I had to remind myself of what is invasive.

Hope this helps :)
