WANTED: What Is This Plant?

Posted by pipefitter54 (My Page) on

Folks...

Bought these two plants at the big plant sale last April. No tags when I got to planting them. Well...they grew and grew and grew...and they were ugly, ugly, ugly. Anyway, they're about 12 feet tall now. And....after I thought they were going to be a great big disappointment...they put out a profuse bouquet of what looks to be a yellow daisy only at the top of the plant.

I've posted them on Pbase...any help you can give would be most appreciated...are they perennial? Can I cut them back during their growing season so I don't have this 12' plant with flowers so far up you can't see 'em?

Thanks in advance!

Don

RE: WANTED: What Is This Plant?

It's a cup plant, Silphium Perfoliatum. I'm not sure if they can be cut back. The "cups" formed by the leaves hold water, and I often see birds drinking from them in my yard.
